About the Chief
Fire Chief Zane Poindexter has been involved in the fire service for over 28 years. Prior to accepting the position of Chief with the Mount Airy Fire Department, Chief Poindexter served the City of Winston-Salem Fire Department as Assistant Fire Marshal. Chief Poindexter also previously served the citizens of Mount Airy as a firefighter, fire engineer, and fire captain from 1996 through August of 2006.
Education & Affiliations
Chief Poindexter holds an Associate in Applied Science degree from Guilford Technical Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Science Management Concentration from Fayetteville State University, and numerous other North Carolina certifications such as Fire Officer Level III, Fire Prevention Inspector Level III, and the NCSFA Advanced Firefighter certificate. He is also a NAFI Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator and is affiliated with several fire service-related organizations such as the North Carolina Association of Fire Chief's, International Association of Fire Chief's, North Carolina Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators, and the National Fire Protection Association. Chief Poindexter is also a certified Emergency Manager Type 4 through the State of North Carolina Division of Emergency Management and a Credentialed Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety.
Family & Community Involvement
Chief Poindexter has been a lifelong resident of Surry County and currently resides in the city with his wife Lori and two sons. Chief Poindexter is very active within his community and church. He is very active with local High School sports and with the Mount Airy Football Booster Club. He has served on the Board of Directors for several civic organizations in Mount Airy as well.
