City of Mount Airy Employment Information

The City of Mount Airy appreciates your interest in employment with the City.  Below is an outlined summary of the City’s employment process that will assist you in your application process.  Resumes submitted via email will not be considered active unless a City of Mount Airy application is also submitted.  Applications are not available on–line.

Job Opportunities

Job vacancies are posted with the Employment Security Commission and on the city's web site.  Vacancies are also posted in the Personnel Division and local colleges.

Application Process

Applications are accepted for current published vacancies only.  A separate application must be submitted for each position for which you are applying.  Resumes may be included with an application but will not be accepted in lieu of an application.  Applications may be picked up at the Employment Security Commission during normal business hours or at the City of Mount Airy Personnel Department.  Resumes received via email will not be considered active unless a City of Mount Airy application is also submitted.  Applications must be fully completed (i.e. dates of employment, salary history, reference names and phone numbers, etc.)  Applications from qualified candidates will be forwarded to the department for review.  If you are selected for the interview, you will be contacted by the Personnel Division.  Only applicants that are interviewed will be notified when the position is filled.

Equal Employment Opportunity

It is the policy of the City to foster, maintain, and promote equal employment opportunity.  The City of Mount Airy selects employees on the basis of applicant’s qualifications without regard to age, sex, race, color, religion, national origin, non-job related handicap, political affiliation, or marital status.  Applicants with physical handicaps shall be given equal consideration with other applicants for positions in which their physical handicaps do not represent an unreasonable barrier to satisfactory performances of duties.

Pre-Employment Process

Applicants are subject to medical exam, drug screening, background check, and DMV record check for positions that require the regular operation of a City vehicle. Some positions may also require a psychological examination and a polygraph. Failure to pass any of these tests will disqualify an applicant from further consideration for employment.
