Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the Planning Department is to provide the citizens of Mount Airy and the surrounding environs with a high level of land planning and community development services. Proper growth management and long range land-use planning helps ensure that Mount Airy will grow in an economically and environmentally sustainable fashion. Various plans, codes, and policies, adopted by the Board of Commissioners, provide a framework to guide and coordinate the timing, location, and design of development and redevelopment activities. Special attention is directed to seeing that these activities occur in a manner which can be efficiently provided with urban services, enhance Mount Airy’s quality of life, and promote the overall public health, safety, and welfare.

Planning Department Staff
DIRECTOR OF PLANNING
Serves as departmental liaison to the Board of Commissioners, Planning Board, Historic Preservation Commission, and the Board of Adjustment. Oversees complex development review, including site plans, subdivisions, annexations, thoroughfare planning, watershed and floodplain requirements, parks and recreation planning, and historic preservation. Coordinates the update and implementation of the City's land-use ordinance revisions.
ZONING ADMINISTRATOR
Enforces and interprets the Zoning Ordinance and review of development plans. Coordination of plan review and permit processing with other agencies. Oversees the rezoning and conditional use application process and requests for variances. Provides staff assistance to the Planning Board, Historic Preservation Commission, and Zoning Board of Adjustment.
ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
Clerical duties to all department employees. Responsibilities include maintaining computerized records, permit processing and organization, handling public requests and calls, preparation of departmental correspondence, and other approvals as needed
