Youth Athletics
There are 3 Youth Athletic Registration Periods throughout the calendar year. Listed below are the programs offered during each registration period and the 2023 registration dates. Scroll down for a detailed description of each program.
2023 SPRING SPORTS
Surry County Cal Ripken Baseball and Foothills Fastpitch Sign-ups will be held January 30th - February 10th.
T-Ball, Machine Pitch & Soccer Sign-ups will be held February 13th - 24th.
2023 FALL SPORTS
Instructional Soccer, Soccer, Volleyball, Softball, Baseball
Fall Sports Registration will take place July 31st - 11th.
2023-2024 WINTER SPORTS
Instructional Basketball, Girl's Basketball, & Boy's Basketball
Winter Sports Registration will take place October 9th - 20th.

Spring Sports
Instructional T-Ball
Ages: 4-5 years old (League Age is determined on May 1st of current year)
Game days: Games are typically played on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week. Practices will begin around the end of March and the season will end around the middle of May.
Description: Instructional T-Ball focuses on the FUNdamentals of baseball. This program introduces children to the basics of baseball in a fun atmosphere by teaching participants about team sports, positions, and basic fielding and hitting skills all while having a great time ! All players will get an opportunity to bat each inning as well as play in the outfield. No outs or scores are recorded. Parents are encouraged to join the fun!
T-Ball
Ages: 6 years old (League Age is determined on May 1st of current year)
Game days:Games are typically played on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There may be some Saturday games. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week. Practices will begin around the middle of March and the season will end with a tournament beginning the middle of May.
Description: The T-Ball league picks up where the instructional league left off. The league goes a little more in depth with positions, fielding and hitting skills. Game situations are introduced as an umpire will moderate game play. FUNdamentals are still stressed. All players will get an opportunity to bat each inning as well as play in the outfield.
Machine Pitch
Ages: 7-8 years old (League Age is determined on May 1st of current year)
Game Days: Games are typically played on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There may be some Saturday games. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week. Practices will begin around the middle of March and the season will end with a tournament beginning the middle of May.
Description: Machine Pitch is a modified version of Coach Pitch. Coaches will use a pitching machine that will throw balls right down the middle. The batter-friendly rules help each player adjust to hitting a moving ball. Each player will have an opportunity to play in the outfield each inning and bat each game.
Cal Ripken Minor League
Ages: 9-10 years old (League Age is determined on May 1st of current year). 8 year olds MAY be eligible to play based on experience and need of players.
Game Days: Games are typically played on Mondays and Thursdays. In addition there will be 1-2 practices a week. Practices will begin in early March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in early June.
Description: In coordination with Surry County Cal Ripken Baseball, Mount Airy Parks and Recreation offers Minor and Major League Baseball. Teams made up of players residing in Mount Airy city limits will compete against other local teams within Surry County. Cal Ripken Minor League Baseball introduces players to more game situations and to the Pitcher position. Teams will play a 14-game season followed by a tournament.
Cal Ripken Major League
Ages: 11-12 years old (League Age is determined on May 1st of current year)
Game Days: Games are typically played on Tuesdays and Fridays. In addition there will be 1-2 practices a week. Practices will begin in early March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in late May.
Description: In coordination with Surry County Cal Ripken Baseball, Mount Airy Parks and Recreation offers Minor and Major League Baseball. Teams made up of players residing in Mount Airy city limits will compete against other local teams within Surry County. Cal Ripken Major League Baseball features more in depth game situations. Teams will play a 14-game season followed by a tournament.
Girl’s Coach Pitch
Ages: 7-8 years old (League Age is determined on January 1st of current year)
Game Days: There are typically 1-2 games played each week in addition to 1-2 practices a week. Practices will begin in mid March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in late May. Game days vary and away games may be played throughout Surry County.
Description: In coordination with Foothills Fastpich Softball, Mount Airy Parks and Recreation now offers Girl’s Coach Pitch Softball. Teams made up of players residing in Mount Airy city limits will compete against teams from other youth organizations within Surry County. Coaches will pitch to players in what is a great transition from girls playing T-Ball to Fastpitch Softball. There will be a 8-10 game season.
10-U Fast Pitch Softball
Ages: 9-10 years old (League Age is determined on January 1st of current year)
Game Days: There are typically 1-2 games played each week in addition to 1-2 practices a week. Practices will begin in mid March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in late May. Game days vary and away games may be played throughout Surry County.
Description: In coordination with Foothills Fastpich Softball, Mount Airy Parks and Recreation offers U-10 and U-13 Softball. Teams made up of players residing in Mount Airy city limits will compete against teams from other youth organizations within Surry County. Foothills Fastpitch introduces softball players to more game situations and the Pitcher position. There will be a 8-10 game season followed by a tournament.
13-U Fast Pitch Softball
Ages: 11-13 years old (League Age is determined on January 1st of current year)
Game Days: There are typically 1-2 games played each week in addition to 1-2 practices a week. Practices will begin in mid March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in late May. Game days vary and away games may be played throughout Surry County.
Description: In coordination with Foothills Fastpich Softball, Mount Airy Parks and Recreation offers U-10 and U-13 Softball. Teams made up of players residing in Mount Airy city limits will compete against teams from other youth organizations within Surry County. The level of play in this division is more competitive than in the younger division, but is still in line with the Mount Airy Parks and Recreation philosophy that everyone plays and has fun!
U-11 Soccer
Ages: 8-10 years old (League Age is determined on January 1st of current year)
Game Days: There are typically 1-2 games a week played on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Saturdays. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week. Practices will begin in mid March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in early May.
Description: The U-11 Soccer program plays under US Youth Soccer guidelines modifying the field, goal, ball and team size to incorporate more offense, defense, touches on the ball, coaching, action, experience and FUN! Games will be played against other Mount Airy teams with the possibility of games against teams from other youth organizations within Surry County. In the U-10 division, players start to develop basic techniques and begin to play as a team.
U-14 Soccer
Ages: 11-13 years old (League Age is determined on January 1st of current year)
Game Days: There are typically 1-2 games a week played on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Saturdays. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week. Practices will begin in mid March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in early May.
Description: In the U-14 soccer program, players are ready for a regulation ball and goal but still play by US Youth Soccer guidelines modifying field and team size to incorporate more offense, defense, touches on the ball, coaching, action, experience and FUN! Games will be played against other Mount Airy teams with the possibility of games against teams from other youth organizations within Surry County. In the U-14 division, players begin to bring their basic techniques and skills to the next level of play. The level of play in this division is more competitive than in the younger divisions, but is still in line with the Mount Airy Parks and Recreation philosophy that everyone plays and has fun!
Fall Sports
Instructional Soccer (Lil' Kickers)
Ages: 4-5 years old (League Age is determined on January 1st of upcoming year)
Program days: Sessions are typically held on Mondays and on a couple Saturdays. The first session will begin in early September and the last session will take place in mid October.
Description: Instructional Soccer focuses on the FUNdamentals of soccer. This program is designed to introduce children to the game of soccer at an early age in a fun and comfortable environment. The program is designed to teach basic soccer skills such as kicking, passing, turning, running, jumping, and more. While an emphasis is placed on developing these skills related to soccer, equal importance is given to helping your child develop social skills and self-confidence while having a great time! Players will have a scrimmage opportunity at the end of each session.
U-8 Soccer
Ages: 6-7 years old (League Age is determined on January 1st of upcoming year)
Game Days: There are typically 1-2 games a week played on Mondays and Saturdays. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week. Practices will begin in mid August and the season will end with a tournament beginning in mid October.
Description: This program introduces children to team sports, teammates and game situations while learning the basics of soccer in a fun atmosphere. The U-8 Soccer program plays on a modified sized field, goal, ball and team that will incorporate more offense, defense, touches on the ball, coaching, action, and FUN! Games will be played against other Mount Airy teams.
U-11 Soccer
Ages: 8-10 years old (League Age is determined on January 1st of upcoming year)
Game Days: There are typically 2 games a week played on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Saturdays. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week. Practices will begin in mid March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in early May.
Description: The U-11 Soccer program plays by US Youth Soccer guidelines modifying the field, goal, ball and team size to incorporate more offense, defense, touches on the ball, coaching, action, and FUN! Games will be played against other Mount Airy teams with the possibility of games against teams from other youth organizations within Surry County. In the U-11 division, players start to develop basic techniques and begin to play as a team.
U-14 Soccer
Ages: 11-13 years old (League Age is determined on January 1st of upcoming year)
Game Days: There are typically 1-2 games a week played on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Saturdays. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week. Practices will begin in mid March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in early May.

Instructional Volleyball (Lil' Spikers)
Ages: 6-8 years old (League Age is determined on September 1st of current year)
Program days: Sessions are held on Thursdays. The first session will begin in early September and the last session will take place in mid October.
Description: Instructional Volleyball focuses on the FUNdamentals of volleyball. The program is designed to provide a fun approach to introducing the sport of volleyball and will include learning the rules of the game, basic drills, and beginner games in a fun and comfortable environment.
4th & 5th Grade Volleyball League
Ages: Current 4th & 5th Graders
Program days: Practices and games are held on Mondays and Thursdays. Practices will begin in late August and the season will wrap up with a tournament ending in late October.
Description: The 4th & 5th Grade Volleyball league introduces players to a volleyball league setting with teammates and game situations. A "Volley-Lite" volleyball will be used on a 6 foot net. Whether a first-timer or a returning player, this is a great league to develop or sharpen your volleyball skills! Age groups may be combined with older players depending on the number of registrations.
Middle School Volleyball League
Ages: Current 6th - 8th Graders
Program days: Practices and games are held on Mondays and Thursdays. Practices will begin in late August and the season will wrap up with a tournament ending in late October.
Description: The 6th - 8th Grade Volleyball league takes players to the next level by playing with a regulation volleyball on a regulation court. The league still focuses on fun and instruction during competition. Whether a first-timer or a returning player, this is a great league to develop or sharpen your volleyball skills! Age groups may be combined with younger players depending on the number of registrations.
Fall Minor League Baseball
Ages: 9-10 years old (League Age is determined on May 1st of upcoming year)
Game Days: Games are typically played on Sunday afternoons every week. In addition there will be 1-2 practices a week. Practices will begin in early March and the season will end with a tournament beginning in early June.

Teams made up of players residing in Mount Airy city limits will compete against other local teams within Surry County. Winter Sports
Instructional Basketball
Ages: This program is for kids that are in Kindergarten and Pre-K (will attend Kindergarten the following year)
Program days: Sessions will be held on Saturday mornings. The first session will begin in early December and the last session will take place in early February.
Description: Instructional Basketball, or Little Dribblers, focuses on the FUNdamentals of basketball. This program is designed to introduce children to the game of basketball at an early age in a fun and comfortable environment. The program is designed to teach basic basketball skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, running, jumping, and more. While an emphasis is placed on developing these skills related to basketball, equal importance is given to helping your child develop social skills and self-confidence while having a great time!
Mini-Mite Basketball
Ages: This program is for basketball players in 1st grade.
Program days: Sessions will be held on Saturday mornings and early afternoon. The first session will begin in early December and the last session will take place in early February.
Description: Mini-Mite Basketball helps players transition from the instructional basketball sessions to basketball games. The program still focuses on teaching children basic basketball skills in training stations but also gives players an opportunity to identify with a coach and team as the session is concluded with a scrimmage. While an emphasis is placed on developing these skills related to basketball, equal importance is given to helping your child develop social skills and self-confidence while having a great time!
23 Boys & 23 Girls Basketball (2nd and 3rd Grade Leagues)
Ages: This league is for 2nd and 3rd Graders.
Program days: Games will be held primarily on Saturday mornings with the possibility of a couple weeknight games. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week.
Description: This program is for boys and girls in the second or third grade. The program provides a framework for sportsmanship and fair play, while teaching the fundamentals of the sport. Players will work on skill development using an intermediate sized ball on 8-foot baskets. Rules are modified to encourage skill development and fun!
45 Boys & 45 Girls Basketball (4th and 5th Grade Leagues)
Ages: This program is for 4th and 5th Graders.
Program days: Games will be held primarily on Saturday mornings for Youth Hoop Boys and primarily Thursday evenings for Youth Hoop Girls with the possibility of a couple alternate game days. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week.
Description: This program is for boys and girls in the fourth or fifth grade. The program provides a framework for sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play, while teaching the fundamentals of the sport. Players will work on skill development and skill enhancement using an intermediate sized ball on 10-foot baskets.
68 Boys (6th - 8th Grade League)
Ages: This program is for 6th -8th Grade Basketball Players
Program days: Games will be held primarily on Saturday mornings and early afternoons. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week.
Description: This program is for boys interested in continuing to play basketball through middle school and into high school in either a recreational OR a school setting. Ages: 6th, 7th and 8th Grade (League Age is determined by what grade the player is currently in)
Program days: Games will be held primarily on Saturdays. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week.
Description: This program is for girls interested in continuing to play basketball through middle school and into high school in either a recreational OR a school setting. The team(s) will be registered through Mount Airy Parks & Recreation and compete in the Surry County Youth Basketball League. Games will take place throughout Surry County. The program provides a framework for sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play, while teaching the fundamentals of the sport. Players will work on skill development and skill enhancement in a competitive but fun atmosphere.
911 Boys Basketball (9th - 11th Grade Boys)
Ages: Boys in 9th - 11th Grade.
Program days: Games will be held primarily on Thursday evenings with the possibility of a couple alternate game days. In addition, there will be 1 practice a week.
Description: This program is for boys interested in staying active by playing basketball in high school. The program provides a framework for sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play. Players will work on skill development and skill enhancement in a competitive but fun atmosphere.
