Mount Airy Parks & Recreation Department maintains 7 parks and a 6.6 mile greenway system that offers a variety of amenities for citizens and visitors of all ages and abilities.
The Granite City Greenway System is the most utilized Mount Airy Parks & Recreation outdoor recreation facility. The greenway incorporates 6.6 miles of connected greenway and is broken into 3 segments:
The Emily B. Taylor Greenway Segment (Veterans Park to Worth Street), the Confluence Greenway Segment (Worth Street to Tharrington Park) and the Ararat River Greenway Segment (Tharrington Park to Riverside Park)
Located 2 blocks from downtown Mount Airy, Riverside Park offers a playground, basketball court, 3 pickleball courts, skate park, 2 picnic shelters, a soccer field, public restrooms, greenway access and a canoe/boat launch onto the Ararat River.
Westwood Park is home to 2 softball fields, 1.5 miles of walking trail (0.8 miles of gravel trail and 0.7 miles of paved trail) with fitness equipment along the way, a playground, mountain bike trail, disc golf course, a picnic shelter, public restrooms and the Tumbling Rock Reservoir featuring a stocked pond with a dock for fishing.
Tharrington Park, located behind BH Tharrington Primary School, offers 2 soccer fields and 1 baseball/softball diamond primarily used for T-Ball. Park-goers will also be able to access the Granite City Greenway as well as the Ararat River via a Canoe / Boat Launch.
Graham Field was constructed in 2002 by Scott Graham and other Mount Airy baseball enthusiasts in an effort to create the first field dedicated to Youth Baseball in Mount Airy. Now the field is used for Cal Ripken Baseball, Youth Softball and Adult Kickball. There are 2 batting cages beside the baseball field. The field is located across the street from the Jones Family Resource Center or "Old Jones School".
HB Rowe Environmental Park was created to serve as an outdoor classroom for students and the public to get in touch with nature. The park is located beside Mount Airy Middle School and connects to the Granite City Greenway System.
Lovills Creek Park is located behind New Market Crossing Shopping Center and features access to Granite City Greenway, 3 Covered Picnic Tables, 6 Hammock Swings, Public Restrooms and will soon be home to the Rotary Pup 27030 Dog Park.
Lowry Park is a pocket park located at the intersection of Main Street and Pine Street. Lowry Park features 4 benches for downtown shoppers taking a break and a decorative seasonal flower bed or display for thousands of walkers and drivers to enjoy as they pass by every day! Lowry Park was dedicated in honor of Commissioners Charles and Frank Lowry in appreciation for their many years of service to the community.
